I’ve griped for years that too many coaches and media members mail in their votes without doing any research – especially for the preseason. I know for a fact that at least one coach put down Grand Canyon as one of the top teams in DII for 2014 despite that fact the Antelopes moved to DI during the offseason. I’m sure he did what many others did – just opened up last year’s final rankings and shuffled teams around a bit before submitting his ballot.
As another shining example of this I submit to you last year’s statistics for Missouri Western. The Griffs were great last season and rewrote their records books, but it was due to an extremely senior laden team. MWSU finished the year nationally ranked around the twenty mark depending on who your ranking provider of choice is.
For the upcoming season College Baseball Newspaper’s preseason rankings has the Griffs checking in at 17 – they ended last season a tick away at 16. MVSU has no business being in the top twenty headed into the new season; they shouldn’t be in the top 30 or 40 either. While the program has been in an upswing of late the offseason was brutal on MVSU. All their top hitters are gone as is their top starting pitcher and closer. The team is a shell of its 2013 version.
Following are last year’s stats for the Griffs. I’ve put a line through players who aren’t with the team this season. So let me ask you this? Do you think MVSU got their top twenty ranking from copying last year’s ranking or do they have the look of a national contender?
