19. LE MOYNE DOLPHINS (43-15-1)
Final 2012 Ranking: 25
The Dolphins won the Northeast-10 Conference Championship in their first year since transitioning to DII and advanced to the East Regional Championship game. Le Moyne was able to hang a pair of early runs on SHNU ace Tim Flight, but they ultimately fell a run short in their game against the Penmen and had their season come to a close a game short of reaching Cary. Backed by an experienced offense and several quality young arms, Head Coach Scott Cassidy and the team will make another run towards the DII CWS in 2013, and be a favorite to emerge from the East Region.
The offense will be led by seniors Zack Wiley and Ryan Mahoney. Wiley had a team best .346 batting average, 19 extra base hits and stole 25 bases. For his effort he was named to the ABCA East Region and Northeast-10 Conference First Teams. Mahoney hit .295, tied with Wiley for the team lead in RBI with 48 and was second on the team with six homeruns. They will be challenged for the team’s offensive MVP by Pat Wiese who hit .328 in limited at bats due to injury last season. In 2011, when Le Moyne was still playing a DI schedule, Wiese hit .290 and spent much of the season as the Dophins’ leadoff man. Brian Stinson only batted .210 last year, but did lead the team with seven home runs and was third on the team in hitting in 2011 at .262. Incoming freshman Dylan Swetman is a promising freshman infielder who could give the team an extra boost of speed and athleticism.
Fewer pitchers put up more impressive numbers than Casey Cannon who was 9-0 with a 1.42 ERA (eighth in the nation). Cannon limited batters to 5.2 hits per nine innings (48 hits in 82.1 innings) which placed him third nationally. Closer Kevin Carrol had a region-best 11 saves, a 1.35 ERA and fanned 22 batters in 20 innings over 18 appearances. Incoming freshman Ryan O’Kane was 20-1 as high school pitcher and has a fastball approaching the 90’s. Sophomore Ryan Davis showed promise in limited action last season and could be a breakout pitcher for the Dolphins as well.
