Rattlers Rattled, Statesmen Take Top Spot in DII Rankings

DELTA ST. STATESMEN
Delta State (3-0) had to rally for three runs in the bottom of the ninth of game three, but the Statesmen were able to sweep Montevallo and raise to the top spot in the rankings. DSU will host Nova Southeastern next weekend in the season’s first top ten matchup.

MINNESOTA STATE MAVERICKS
The Mavs (0-0) don’t take to the diamond until this Saturday when they play a pair with both Winona State and Sioux Falls in the Metrodome.

TAMPA SPARTANS
UT (5-1) started the season with a baffling loss to Bentley, but came back to outscore the Falcons 18-0 in the remaining two contests. Last weekend the Spartans swept visiting Georgia College.

MOUNT OLIVE TROJANS
The Trojans (6-0) began 2013 with a sweep at Lenoir-Rhyne and a four run rally in the bottom of the ninth Sunday gave MOC completed a sweep over Newberry this weekend. One of the best matchups of this week will be in Cary when Mount Olive hosts Le Moyne.

ST. MARY’S (TX) RATTLERS
The Rattlers (5-2) started the season with an as anticipated sweep of Newman, but went 2-2 last week which included a narrow win over Oklahoma Christian and series loss to UA Fort Smith featuring a pair of one-run losses.

CENTRAL MISSOURI MULES
The Mules (3-1) dropped their season opener to upstart Texas A&M Kingsville, but rallied to win their next three at the Astros in Action DII Invitational.

NOVA SOUTHEASTERN SHARKS
The Sharks (5-1) won a series over Columbus State opening weekend and handily swept Albany State this week. NSU had a massive showdown with Delta State this week which fault NSU into top team consideration if they are able to take the series.

CHICO STATE WILDCATS
As anticipated the Wildcats (4-0) had little trouble starting their season as they swept four games from the Academy of Art. One of the contests included the first no-hitter in Chico State baseball.

CATAWBA INDIANS
The Indians (8-0) have reeled off eight straight wins which included victories over Pfeiffer, Tusculum and Barton. They’ll try to extend their win streak to double digits with games against Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate this week.

ANGELO STATE RAMS
Angelo State (6-1) swept Ouachita Baptist opening weekend and captured its highly-touted series against Southern Arkansas 2-1. ASU should have a much less competitive week with games against McMurry and Lubbock Christian.

FRANKLIN PIERCE RAVENS
The Ravens (0-0) first games aren’t slated until February 22nd when they take part in the Ripken Experience at Myrtle Beach against West Virginia Wesleyan, Felician, Chestnut Hill and LIU Post.

ST. CLOUD ST. HUSKIES
The SCSU (2-1) sputtered in their season opener as they were shutout and dropped a game to Texas A&M Kingsville, but the Huskies got back on track with wins over Loyola (LA) and Southeastern Oklahoma State.

USC AIKEN PACERS
The Pacers (5-1) began the season with a sweep of Lincoln Memorial and won two of three against Carson-Newman in which USC Aiken pitchers tallied a pair of shutouts.

SETON HILL GRIFFINS
The Griffins (0-0) first games of the year will be this week when they play three against Francis Marion in what should be a great series with two top rated teams.

SOUTHERN ARKANSAS MULERIDERS
The Muleriders (5-2) opened the season with wins over Cameron and Wiley College. Last weekend SAU went head to head with Angelo State in a battle of top teams but only managed to win one of three against the Rams.

WEST FLORIDA ARGONAUTS
The Argos (6-0) paired back-to-back three game sweeps over Florida Southern and Rollins to start the season. UWF’s third victory of the year was the milestone 1,000th win for the program.

LANDER BEARCATS
Lander (5-1) won a series with North Greenville to start the season and outscored the defending national champs WCU 26-5 in a three game sweep over the weekend. Logan Pemberton has started his LU career by going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 20 K’s in 13.2 IP.

GRAND VALLEY ST. LAKERS
The Lakers will be one of the last ranked teams to take to the field. GVSU starts the Jamie Detillon era February 23rd on the road against Missouri S&T.

LE MOYNE DOLPHINS
The Dolphins (0-0) start their season this week when they play three at Mount Olive. It will be great matchup of offensive vs pitching in a contest of top 20 teams.

UC SAN DIEGO TRITONS
The Tritons (4-2) played their second consecutive quality opponent as they took two of three from Grand Canyon in Phoenix. USCD also won two of three against Colorado Mesa to start the season.

TEX. A&M-KINGSVILLE JAVELINAS
The Javelinas (6-1) can boast wins over a pair of top ten ranked teams after knocking off Central Missouri in week one and St. Cloud State last week. TAMUK can really prove their mettle this week when they play St. Mary’s in a midweek matchup.

ST. EDWARD’S HILLTOPPERS
The Hilltoppers (5-2) began the season with a series win over UA Fort Smith, rolled over Oklahoma Christian and won two of three over Newman. SEU next plays new-to-DII McMurry who has one of the best logos and mascots but worst hats.

FRANCIS MARION PATRIOTS
For the second season in a row the Pats (4-3) have defied preseason prognostications and started the season looking like a middle of the road club rather than a title contender. FMU went 1-2 at the Carolinas Hospital Systems Baseball Classic and won two of three against St. Rose.

COLORADO MESA MAVERICKS
The Mavs (1-2) had this week off after starting the season with a showdown series against UCSD where they could only muster to win one of three. CMU should have an easier time this week with four against the Yellowjackets of Montana St-Billings.

WEST CHESTER GOLDEN RAMS
Last season the Rams (0-3) didn’t lost their third game of the year until April 7th. This year the defending national champions started the season with three straight loses as they were dismantled by Lander and outscored 5-26.

TUSCULUM PIONEERS
The Pioneers (5-2) started the season with a win over Pfeiffer and a pair of close loses to Catawba. Last weekend TC swept three from Norte Dame (OH) where former perfect game hurler Len Barker is the head coach.

The Lakers (2-1) started the season with a double-header win of Chowan, but couldn’t take game three to sweep the series. Mercyhurst has the week off before heading to Myrtle Beach to take part in the Northeast Challenge.

MISSOURI WESTERN ST. GRIFFONS
Missouri Western (1-1) split with the Arkansas Tech on opening day. The Griffons fell 6-5 in the first game before rebounding for a 5-3 victory in game two. The Griffons and Wonderboys complete their series Monday.

The Pirates (6-0) have began the year by sweeping their series with Winston-Salem State and Concord. AASU should increase their streak to nine after their games with Augusta State this week.

The Penmen’s (0-0) road back to Cary starts February 22nd when they play LIU Post, Chestnut Hill, Mercyhurst and West Va. Wesleyan in Myrtle Beach.

UIndy (0-0) will host Notre Dame (OH) starting on February 16th for a three game series for their first games of the year.

NORTH ALABAMA LIONS
First pitch for the Lions (0-0) will be on Tuesday when they host Le Moyne Owen in a doubleheader. UNA will travel to Lakeland, FL to play three at Florida Southern over the weekend.
