Former College Stars on Team USA Roster

USA Baseball announced its provisional 27-man roster for the 2013 World Baseball Classic.  Of the 27 players, 14 of them are former DI or DII college standouts. 

Both Tennessee and Miami can boast having a pair of players on the roster. The Vols have reigning NL Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey who was a three-time First Team All-American in Knoxville from 1994-96 and is UT’s career leader in wins, appearances, games started, innings pitched and strikeouts. Dickey could wind up pitching to another former UT star, J.P. Arencibia, who was a two-time All American catcher. The Miami Hurricanes have former NL MVP Ryan Braun who was a repeat All American, including being the “National Freshman of the Year” while playing at Miami from 2003-2005. Another former ‘Cane, Chris Perez made the Team USA roster as a pitcher. His time at Miami overlapped with Braun as he played there during the 2004-2006 seasons.

Steve Cishek helped guide the Carson-Newman Eagles to the 2007 SAC Tournament championship before advancing to professional baseball.

Other notable former college names on the roster include Mark Teixeira who had an accomplished career at Georgia Tech and was named the  was the 2000 Dick Howser Award winner as National Player of the Year, Mitchell Boggs from Georgia where he spent three seasons and helped the Bulldogs reach the 2004 College World Series and Glen Perkins who was the 2004 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and went 15-0 with a 2.09 ERA his last two season in Big Ten play.

Two former DII players, Steve Cishek, the up-and-coming Miami Marlin reliever from Carson-Newman and Kutztown alum Ryan Vogelsong, who helped the San Francisco Giants win the World Series, are also on the roster.
