DII Baseball 2014 Sleeper Pick: 

The Pioneers may seem like an unlikely pick to make a run at a national title, but after a breakout season in which the team tied the school record for wins and earned their highest CCAA finish since joining the conference in 2009, Head Coach Bob Ralston’s team could be the club to beat in the conference this season. East Bay’s pitching staff posted an impressive 2.91 team ERA last season which was 15th in the nation and the heart of the staff will be back on the mound once again. The able arms, combined with a solid core of returning everyday players, make CSUEB a dark horse team to advance to Cary this season. Continue reading

St. Edward’s Brannon Easterling Wins 2013 Josh Willingham Award

easterlingBrannon Easterling, a junior pitcher for the St. Edward’s Hilltoppers, has been named the inaugural Josh Willingham Award winner. The honor goes to DII college baseball’s most valuable player.

Easterling was the ace of the St. Edward’s pitching staff which made its first ever trip to the DII Baseball Championships. The 6’5” righty from College Station, Texas tied for the national lead in victories and finished a historic Hilltopper campaign with a 2.10 ERA. He led the nation with an incredible 14 complete games, four of which were shutouts, and also topped the nation in innings pitched with 132.2. In his final game of the season he shutout Grand Canyon in the opening round of the DII Baseball Championships as he pitched SEU to a 1-0 win. Continue reading

Semifinalists for the 2013 Tino Martinez Award Announced

tinoawardThe semifinalists for the 2013 Tino Martinez Award have been announced. The award is presented to the most outstanding player in DII college baseball. The annual honor is named after the former University of Tampa Spartan, United States Olympian, first round draft pick and MLB All-Star, Tino Martinez.

There are forty-one semifinalists with five players from each of the eight DII regions. In year’s past there were at least six players from each region; however the process has been modified slightly and this year each school has been limited to a single player advancing to the semifinal round. Statesmen Stymied by Muleriders but Remain DII’s Top Team; USC Aiken Jumps to Third After Winning Week

The Statesmen (30-5-1) remain the top team for the tenth week in a row despite being stymied by Southern Arkansas in a premier midweek matchup. Over the weekend DSU was able to sweep Union University to reach the 30 win plateau. Delta State has Ouachita Baptist and West Georgia on this week’s schedule.
Mount Olive (39-4) held on to win a game against a determined St. Augustine’s squad and swept visiting Limestone to move to the second spot in the rankings. The Trojans will prep for the early Conference Carolinas tournament by playing Francis Marion and Pfeiffer.
The Pacers’ (34-8) had the best week in the nation as they clobbered Catawba and swept Lander with all four games being on the road. USCA returns home to host Shorter and Columbus State who better come to Aiken ready to play.
The Wildcats’ win streak ended at fifteen when were shutout in the third game of their series with Cal Poly Pomona, but did win the rest of the three games in the series for another quality winning week. Chico hosts UCSD next week as they look to stretch out another double-digit win streak.
Tampa (30-8) drops a few notches after needing extra innings to get past Embry-Riddle and only mustering one of three wins against visiting Palm Beach Atlantic. UT has a game against Florida Tech and a series with Eckerd this week as they look to return to their winning ways. Continue reading

Sixty Student Athletes Added to Tino Martinez Award Watch List

Based on their outstanding play this season sixty players have been added to the 2013 Tino Martinez Award Watch List. The award is presented to the most outstanding player in DII college baseball. The annual honor is named after the former University of Tampa Spartan, United States Olympian, first round draft pick, MLB All-Star and newly named member of the College Baseball Hall of Fame, Tino Martinez. Semifinalists are scheduled to be announced on
May 6th, 2013.

Initial nominations for the award were made by baseball sports information contacts, coaches and media members. A panel of media, coaches and sports information officers was polled to finalize the candidates and determine the winner. A fan Internet vote also contributes to the final vote. Continue reading

2013 College Baseball Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

Two of the most respected college coaches in history join five outstanding players with a good deal of Major League Baseball experience in the 2013 class of the College Baseball Hall of Fame.

“This class brings a different flavor to the induction process because it features our first Division III coach, perhaps the greatest Division II player ever and three players from the 1950s, ‘60s and early ‘70s, which is a time period that has been a bit underrepresented in past inductions,” said Mike Gustafson, executive director of the College Baseball Hall of Fame. “We are excited to welcome them to the Hall of Fame.” Continue reading
